Get to know New Student Orientation!
Orientation is here to help you transition into the AU community. Learn more about orientation for all incoming students below!Â
Our in-person orientation experience starts in August, after new students move in and spans through Welcome Week during the first week of classes. We can't wait to see you then!
Welcome to life as an Eagle! At AU, we're changemakers. We’re all about building connections, strengthening community, and creating a better future. On campus or off campus, in DC or abroad, we rise to the challenges of our times – and we do it together.
For students starting at AU in Spring 2025, New Student Orientation will be held in-person on January 9-11, 2025. Please monitor your AU email for additional information!
The AU journey starts with Orientation. Orientation at American University is a multi-part program, with virtual summer webinars and in-person New Student Orientation offered at the start of the fall semester. We hope that after participating in orientation you’ll feel at home, be ready to succeed and have found a community with your fellow Eagles!
We're excited to join you on your journey as a New Eagle with our New Student Orientation program this summer! Newly admitted students entering the university in August 2024 will have the opportunity to participate in online orientation programming during the summer months in addition to attending our required in-person New Student Orientation program the week before classes begin, concluding with Welcome Week during the first week of classes. Be sure to activate and keep an eye on your AU email for details of regarding what's next!

We know you're not new to college, but you are probably new to our campus and the Eagle family. Our orientation programs are designed for all of our New Eagle undergraduate students - we recommend them for our transfer students as well. In December, we will email transfer students with details about Orientation, including more ways to connect with each other and with our campus.
For students starting at AU in Spring 2025, New Student Orientation will be held in-person on January 9-11, 2025. Please monitor your AU email for additional information!
Once you officially deposit to American University, you will begin receiving information from your AU school or college with information regarding class registration and other important tasks. If you do not receive information, please contact the advising office of the school or college that houses your intended major. We recommend responding to your advisor as timely as possible so that you can effectively create your class schedule.
Given the number and complexity of requirements in many majors, it is important to create an academic plan with your advisor. They will help you develop your interests and goals, review the transfer credits you have been awarded, and register you for your first semester classes.Â
Note that you won't register for classes during orientation. Your advisor will review your proposed course selection for your fall classes, and-if appropriate-clear you to register. You'll then sign up for your courses using the online AU Registration System.
