Graduate Certificate Programs

American University is pleased to offer a variety of certificate programs to enhance and enrich student's skills and marketability. At this time, the following certificate is eligible to receive federal Title IV funding:

Premedical Program Cost and Financial Aid

Tuition and Fees

Students are required to complete 24 credits within 12 months to receive their certificate. Typically students take 8-12 credits per semester. Student tuition rates vary dependent upon the course level.

In addition to standard tuition and fees, many students may also be assessed laboratory fees.ÌýGenerally these fees range from $75-$100 per lab.

Financial Aid Application Process

For the purposes of determining federal financial aid eligibility, the pre-med certificate program is considered an undergraduate 5th year post-baccalaureate program. Please note that this program is not a Masters or Doctoral program. For aid consideration, you must:

  • Be admitted to the Pre-Med Program
  • Meet aid eligibility requirements
  • Complete a
    • If prompted when reviewing dependency questions, please indicate "no" to this question: At the beginning of the school year, will you be working on a master's or doctorate program (such as an M.A., M.B.A., M.D., J.D., Ph.D., Ed.D., graduate certificate, etc.)?
    • If required, be sure to include parental information on the FAFSA
    • The FAFSA school code for American University is 001434

Financial Aid Offer Notification

Financial aid applications will be reviewed within 2-3 weeks of admission. Financial aid package information is emailed to admitted students via their respective AU emails once all information has been received.

Additional Aid Eligibility Requirements

Students enrolled in the Pre-Med Program are only eligible for federal aid for 12 consecutive months.

  • Independent students may be eligible for up to $25,000Ìýfrom the Federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized loan programs within the 12 consecutive months. Independent students are ineligible for the Federal Direct PLUS loan.
  • Dependent students may be eligible for up to $11,000 from the Federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized loan programs within the 12 consecutive months. The dependent student's parent(s) may be eligible to apply for the Federal Direct Parent PLUS loan.

Additional Funding Options

  • Private (non-federal) loans are available if additional assistance is needed or if a student has already used up their federal aid eligibility.ÌýÌý
  • Payment plans can be used to split the semester balance due into monthly payments.
