Alpha Kappa Delta Sociology Honor Society
Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) was first organized in 1920 in the Sociology Department at the University of Southern California. In 1983, sociologists at American University founded our local Epsilon Chapter. Today, AKD includes 325 chapters in 46 states, the District of Columbia, Taiwan, and Canada. AKD seeks to acknowledge and promote excellence in scholarship in the study of sociology and the research of social problems.
To support young scholars, AKD sponsors award competitions for outstanding graduate and undergraduate papers and provides financial resources for students to present their work at sociology conferences. In addition, AKD publishes the academic journal, Sociological Inquiry. For more information, please visit the .
Each semester, our local chapter hosts a salon for members to discuss ideas related to their research interests. The Epsilon Chapter in the Department of Sociology at American University accepts applications for new memberships each year and holds an annual induction ceremony for new honors students in the spring. For information on these events, please contact our local AKD representatives.
