Aly Higgins Wheeler WeLead Class of 2013-2014
Aly Higgins Wheeler, Founder, Wheelerhouse, LLC
What was the most valuable thing you learned from WeLead?
WeLead gives real life examples of strong women working in politics. The program offers insight into many different aspects of the political world, and emphasizes the importance of networking and community.
What was your favorite part of the program?
I always enjoyed listening to the unique speakers that WeLead was able to feature.
What advice would you give to the current WeLead class?
A saying I’ve followed in my career thus far has been that “a boat is always safe in the harbor, but that’s not what boats are built for.” My advice is just that: take chances and try something new even if it scares you. While I love a good plan, the most growth I’ve seen in my career has been when I deviated from “the plan” and jumped at a new challenge.
How did you secure your current position, and did it include any WeLead networking or alumnae?
I currently run my own political fundraising company, and I’ve definitely worked with former WeLead speakers and alumnae in my role.
Any other thoughts on your WeLead experience?
As a WeLead alum and an American University alum, I am just grateful to live in DC. It is a city filled with so many people who want to change the world, and that is inspiring.
Before starting her own political fundraising business, Higgins Wheeler worked for the RNC, on Elise Stefanik’s Congressional campaign, and on Governor Scott Walker’s Presidential campaign. In addition to continuing to support WeLead, she has worked with RightNOW Women PAC and She Should Run. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications, Law, Economics and Government from American University.
