American University’s School of Communication (AU SOC) is proud to announce it will be hosting a pre-internship training program for future business reporters in partnership with the . This program, aimed at the intersection of business and government relations, will cover important topics such as the workplace, technology, small business, and student loans.

Adjunct Associate Professor and business reporting veteran Paul Albergo developed and will lead the program. Until 2022, Albergo served as the executive editor for Bloomberg Industry Group, where he managed the company’s newsroom. Albergo began his career at Bloomberg, then known as BNA, in 1986 as a reporter.

"SOC welcomes our role in training business journalists of the future," said Journalism Division Director Terry Bryant. "We know our campus, our faculty and the curriculum under Paul will provide unforgettable experiences in the nation's capital."

"We are excited about this partnership! The News Fund prides itself on providing quality training for the next generation of journalists. American University's reputation for doing the same, coupled with its location in the nation's capital, makes it a great choice for a new residency," said Shirley Carswell, executive director of the Dow Jones News Fund.

“The DJNF interns in this program will benefit from the expertise of the AU SOC facility as well as many journalists who call D.C. home. The program will introduce them to the fundamental skills they will need as they begin their internships and careers,” Albergo said.

The pre-internship training program will be held over nine days between May 21 and 29 at AU SOC. Dow Jones News Fund will cover all costs for the students participating in the program, including room, board, and transportation. Students will learn how to cover important topics such as the changing workplace, evolving technology, small business, and student loans.

After completing the program, the 10 students will head to their host news organizations. This cohort of DJNF interns will head to ASI Media, Automotive News, Bay City News, BusinessDen, Detroit News, Richmond BizSense, Royal Media, The Current, and VT Digger.

The Dow Jones News Fund workshop joins other high-profile training partnerships at American University’s School of Communication. The POLITICO Journalism Institute, launched in 2013 by AU, POLITICO, and the Maynard Institute, aims to diversify Washington-area newsrooms by providing students with training in reporting focused on politics and policy.
