Dear AU community,
We are devastated by the appalling violence and tragic loss of life in Israel and Gaza stemming from this weekend’s invasion. We grieve for those who are suffering, including those in our AU global community who have friends, family, and other deep ties in the region. As we hope for an end to this war and the horrors of violence, we must seek pathways toward a just future with safety, peace, and human dignity.
Our priority is supporting our community however we can, and making sure our community is aware of available resources. Campus services, including the Center for Well-Being and Psychological Services and the AU Protocol 24-hour support line (202-885-7979) are available for students. The BHS service is available for faculty and staff and their families, and the Kay Spiritual Life Center welcomes all community members. Caring for one another during trying times is the hallmark of our AU community.
In our community, these horrific events cause sorrow, pain, and concern. As events and reactions unfold in the coming days, it is important to remember that violence in any form should not be glorified. Our interactions–whether in-person or online–should be grounded in our commitments to human dignity and reflect our best intentions. Discourse and even disagreement can and should be productive while grounded in respect for others. Importantly, discrimination or harassment against any member of our community will not be tolerated. Let us exhibit the humanity and goodwill we want for those suffering in the Middle East.
Wishing peace and comfort to you and everyone affected by this tragedy.
Sylvia
