Nicole Darnall is the Arlene R. and Robert P. Kogod Eminent Scholar Chair in Sustainability at American University, holding appointments in both the Kogod School of Business and the School of Public Affairs. A globally recognized, award-winning scholar, her research delves into how organizations and individuals can advance sustainability, focusing on organizational structures, technologies, incentives, and capabilities that catalyze transformative change.
Committed to accelerating sustainability efforts, Dr. Darnall serves as a Commissioner on the U.S. General Services Administration’s Acquisition Policy Federal Advisory Committee, where she provides strategic guidance on embedding sustainability into over $660 billion of federal procurement. She also leads as President of the Group for Research on Organizations and the Natural Environment, an influential network of nearly 2,000 scholars dedicated to advancing sustainable enterprise worldwide.
In 2024, she was honored with the Global 50 Women in Sustainability Award, recognizing her profound impact on the field. She is an elected Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration and holds prestigious fellowships with the Social Science Research Council, the Economic and Social Research Council, the Erasmus Mundus Programme, and the Spanish Ministry of Education.
A trusted thought leader in sustainability, Dr. Darnall continues to shape the field in her editorial roles at leading international journals and through her partnerships with organizations worldwide to align their strategies for a more sustainable future.
Dr. Darnall holds the title of Foundation Professor Emerita at Arizona State University (ASU), where she previously served as Professor and Associate Dean for Faculty Success and Strategic Initiatives in the School of Sustainability and College of Global Futures. During her time at ASU, she also directed the Sustainable Purchasing Research Initiative, producing actionable insights to guide organizations' sustainable procurement practices.
Before transitioning to academia, she worked as an economist with the U.S. Forest Service and a data analyst at an industrial wastewater treatment facility.
