American University recognizes donors for their support of the university with four giving societies, Honored Benefactors, the President's Circle, the 1893 Society, and the Helen Palmer Kettler Society.
Honored Benfactors
Established in 2023 to celebrate those who have contributed $1 million or more to the university in their lifetime or through estate intentions, AU’s most generous individuals and families are given the distinction of Honored Benefactor.
Whether by establishing much-needed scholarships, championing exceptional scholar-teachers, propelling pathbreaking research, or transforming the campus landscape and experience, Honored Benefactors empower AU to be the catalyst for change where our world needs it most.
In April 2024, the university unveiled the Honored Benefactors donor wall on campus overlooking the Eric A. Friedheim Quadrangle. In addition to inclusion on the wall’s listing, Honored Benefactors receive tailored recognition opportunities and benefits Â
President's Circle
The President's Circle recognizes leadership in philanthropy demonstrated by American University alumni, parents, faculty, staff, and friends. Established in 1981, the President's Circle and its giving levels honor five U.S. presidents who were friends of American University. Benjamin Harrison signed the Act of Congress chartering the university in 1893. William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, and Herbert C. Hoover served on AU's Board of Trustees. John F. Kennedy delivered his famous speech, The Strategy of Peace, at the 1963 AU Commencement.
Benjamin Harrison Associates ($50,000 and higher)
William McKinley Associates ($25,000 to $49,999)
Theodore Roosevelt Associates ($10,000 to $24,999)
Herbert C. Hoover Associates ($5,000 to $9,999)
John F. Kennedy Associates ($2,500 to $4,999)
American University is deeply grateful for the financial commitment of our leadership donors. Their gifts enable the university to make the greatest impact on campus. In appreciation for their support, President's Circle members receive special recognition throughout the year.
Giving levels are determined by contributions during a given fiscal year (July 1 - June 30).
Donors whose cumulative giving totals $100,000 or more are recognized as Lifetime Members of the President's Circle.
1893 Society
Since its founding in 1893, AU has relied on the generosity of alumni, parents, and friends to grow into the outstanding institution it is today. To recognize the commitment of our most loyal donors and the significant role they play in AU's past, present, and future, the AU Board of Trustees voted in May 2007 to establish the 1893 Society.
Members of the 1893 Society have been donors to AU for two or more consecutive years, and will receive special recognition throughout the year in appreciation of their generosity. American University is truly grateful for the loyal support of our donors who have contributed to such a rich history and ensured a bright future.
The Helen Palmer Kettler Society
The Helen Palmer Kettler Society was established in 1990 to acknowledge individuals who have included AU in their estate plans and have named AU as a beneficiary (revocably or irrevocably) in their will, life insurance, charitable gift annuity, charitable trust, or similar vehicle. Individuals who include AU in their estate plans and make their intentions known to the university are invited to membership in the Helen Palmer Kettler Society.
