Communication October 14, 2024
Dear AU community,
Campus is safe following an immediate AUPD response to reports of a potential gun on campus. No live gun was ultimately involved in this incident and there is no threat to our community. We want to share additional details about what happened, the response that resolved the situation, and support resources for our community.
At approximately 2:30 p.m. this afternoon, AUPD received a report of a student with a gun in Anderson Hall. AUPD personnel responded immediately, and DC Metropolitan Police (MPD) were called and responded to campus. The emergency alert was issued to secure the campus, ensure community members stayed safe, and support the police response. AUPD made contact with the student, who had moved to the Hall of Science, and the student voluntarily met with our officers. AUPD confirmed there was no gun and took the student into custody. The potential gun was later identified as a toy, which has been confiscated. At 3:00 p.m., the all-clear was issued.
Campus was locked down out of an abundance of caution and in accordance with our safety protocols. Safety is always our highest priority, and AUPD’s immediate response and the campus emergency alert helped resolve this situation without any threat to our community. Fake or toy guns are prohibited on campus and conduct actions can result from possession or use of these items.
Thank you for following the important safety directions. This incident is a good reminder for all community members to review our emergency response information and safety protocols.
Campus support resources are available for any community members affected by this incident, including the Center for Well-Being and Psychological Services and the AU ProtoCall 24-hour support line (202-885-7979) for students and the BHS service for faculty and staff and their families.
Sincerely,
Bronté Burleigh-Jones
